KWCW, as a largely volunteer-run station, rises and falls on the strength of its volunteer broadcasters.
Each DJ or show host is, in effect, a mini-programming director, determining the programming of his or her show. It is the duty of the Programming Director to oversee KWCW programming and those responsible, to the ends outlined below…

Oversee the training of KWCW volunteer programmers, in both the technical, announcing, and programming aspects of show hosting. The basic mechanics—i.e. the technical aspects of show hosting—can be learned in under an hour: true skill with the broadcast medium requires further practice and guidance.
Understand the (admittedly subjective) principles of good broadcasting: here, good broadcasting is to be understood in the sense of effectively speaking to listeners both inside and outside the bounds of the Whitman College community, i.e. ensuring a less Whitman-centric broadcast; in the sense of helping volunteer broadcasters understand the importance of their personality—quirks, warts, and idiosyncracies—and presentation, with a firm grasp of those mannerisms that are commonly cited as listener turn-offs; in the sense of providing interesting and intriguing broadcast material; and in the sense of approaching the airwaves in a professional manner, realizing that professionalism need not be equated with homogeneity but, instead, seriousness and purpose.

Oversee the expansion of Dubmile system to function as an incentive system, rewarding with Dubmiles those parties interested in putting in time at KWCW above and beyond that of a hosting a show. Dubmile rewardable tasks/activities fall could include…
Work with Public Service and Production Director to ensure that live copy—including notice of public events and special KWCW broadcast events—is available in broadcast booth at all times for show hosts
Work to, time permitting, solicit those parties interested in specialty programming on KWCW
- Pairing prospective KWCW volunteer programmers with experienced programmers
- Arranging for KWCW parties, volunteer intermingling events, etc.
- Possible publication of KWCW DJ Newsletter
- Always working to keep DJs aware of fellow DJs activities
- Working with Promotion Director to develop system of effective cross-promotion between shows (i.e., “if you’re interested in hearing more Americana music on KWCW, check out both the Bluegrass and Beyond, every Thursday morning from 9 to 11, and Hard Feelings, AltCountry and beyond, with Joe Carver, every Tuesday from 11am-1pm”)
- filing of vinyl/CDs
- volunteering to help News Director produce KWCW News program

- attendance at KWCW-hosted workshops (audio-editing software tutorials, music mixing seminars with skilled DJs, etc.)
